No Tour of MO for Hermann this time

Tour of Missouri passes on Hermann this year. A bit disappointed yes, but I can't say I am surprised being that Hermann was pass through the first year and start city the next. I think it's good to see the tour move around the state.

This week is a much needed rest week after three good solid weeks of training. I'm pleased with my decision to have cycle-smart coach Alec work with me on my plan. I would say the biggest difference from what I've done in the past to this plan is I'm working a bit harder aerobically this time in the year, adding high cadence drills, on bike strength drills and working on the core.

Old Man Winter will always win

Blue put in best the other day when he said...

"This phenomenon of Global Warming that we are experiencing is truly kicking my ass"

Today old man winter kicked our ass for sure.

Danny, Shuan and I were the only ones that attempted the 16 degree ride. Shaun made it about an hour, did not have the legs and toes were frozen so he called it a day, ass number 1 kicked.

Danny and I, still riding with positive attitudes and ready to take on old man winter rode on. Then is started to snow covering everything. Nothing that made the gravel roads to bad, but sure did not help make things seem warm. My hands and feet started to feel the cold come on and never let up.

Two hours into the ride I could feel my ass being kicked and told Danny I had had enough. He obliged to my wishes and we both called it a day. Ass number 2 and 3 kicked!

Thanks to Dawndi for the ride home!

Sunday Gravel for 14

These Sunday gravel rides are a blast! I tend to spend all week anticipating the fun that will be had. Today I was surprised by the turnout for sure, 14 of us headed out for a tough 45 miles of hilly gravel. Everyone finished and will certainly remember today's ride in their own way. Thanks to the STL and Washington crew for making the trip!

If you did not make the trip to Hermann, here is what you missed.

Jailed for a few days

The good fortune of nice winter weather takes a break over the next few days as we struggle to get into the 20's. That's just cold enough to jail me to the basement. Looks like I'll be there the rest of the week.

Sunday still looks good for a 45 mile gravel grinder.

Sunday Gravel Grinder

Great day for what ended up being door to door 3.5 hour 40 mile ride. This sums up the day well.

Thanks to Matt and Sonya for making the trip to Hermann for the ride.

Back at it

Holidays are over and it's time to get back at it. Monday was the official start to this years training plan. For 2009 I've enlisted the help of this guy. He has a good understanding of cross and will help me reach my cross goals for this year.

Sunday is the first official Hermann Gravel Grinder. All are welcome, looks we'll have about 8 riders that I know of showing up. Want to join? Check out the blog and show up at 11am Sunday.

From time to time I get the question, "What's a dog fish?"... Thanks to John Merli, here is the answer.

Cross-Ocalypse

First ever Cross-Ocalypse cross race is in the book. Not sure if it was the good luck wish from my wife, or the awesome breakfast the Louie made for the local Dogfish crew at his restaurant, or the new bike or what… but it all turned out to be a good day with a 2nd place showing. Granted there were only 6 of us in the A race, but I’ll take it.

The day’s objective really was to see how the new bike would handle. The course ended up being perfect for this as it had a bit of everything from loose sand and gravel, hill run up, downhill off camber section, deep mud and bumpy ground. Overall the bike was perfect. The wheels seems to carve their own line through the thick mud with ease, tubeless tires seemed to glide over the bumps and held exceptionally well to the ground, the Sram shifting was awesome with zero learning curve and finally the near 4lbs weight reduction was noticeable especially during the later part of the race. Very happy with the bike. Thanks to Revolution Cycles in Washington for putting this thing together for me.

I have some photos and video of the day that I’ll get posted later. Thanks Rich and crew for a great time!

Bringing in the New Year Right

Brought in the new year right with a 3 hour gravel grinder with some of the Hermann Crew. Shaun (pictured below), his brother in law, and Danny all head headed out with me for what was a great day for riding.

Cross bike is home but missing the rear wheel. UPS did not shop ground Tue or Wed of this week due to the holiday, so the cassette I need is in transit. Might be here on Friday so I'll have it for Sunday's Cross race. Should be a good time with the typical bubba series set up with an added relay at the end of the day. Shaun, Louie and I plan to team up for the relay.

I hope the cassette is here, if not I'll run the new front wheel with my old wheel on the back. Either way I'll get to race the new sram stuff. I took the bike out before the gravel grinder to play around with it a bit. The weight savings is very noticeable, and sram shifting is very nice, so far very happy with the upgrade.

Happy New Year
