Progress for Hermann Cycling

Today was a positive step forward for cycling in Hermann. A few weeks ago I received a reply from MoDOT regarding an inquire I sent about road signage. The idea is to install share the road signs and directional signs to compliment the routes listed on the Hermann Area Cycling web site.

Today myself and the Hermann Director of Tourism met with a MoDot representative to see what our options are, costs, and next steps. It was a very positive meeting with no push back or hesitation to install these signs. End result is that in the next few months share the road signs will be installed along this route to get things started. Focus will be on key areas where they may be a blind spot or a spot where it's a good idea to bring attention to a motorist that cyclists may be on the road.

The next step is to see what the cost will be to install custom directional signs. Somewhat like the Mississippi River Trail. These signs will compliment the routes posted on the Hermann Area Cycling web site. The goal is to provide cyclists a safe place to ride and info on where to ride.

The city of Hermann is excited and behind offering the cycling community a destination where people can ride their bikes (not just on the Katy Trail), drink good wine and enjoy what Hermann has to offer. Living here now for just over a year and a half, I have come to enjoy what Hermann has to offer and am impressed with how the city has embraced ideas focused toward cycling.

Finally we had a conversation about a time trial and road race weekend that local cyclist Jose and I have been working up. Again, positive results from the city and MoDot. Worked out a date with Mike Weiss for April 19 and 20, 2008. Some info here with more details to follow.
