Hellbender Road Race

New route this year was a good one, nice to start and finish in Rolla vs. having to drive the extra miles to Newberg which as no cell coverage, that was always a pain. Overall the guys and gals that put on this year Hellbender did a nice job.

My goal today was to get KOM points, hopefully 2 or 3, that would put me in 2nd or 3rd overall and then try for  a few points at the finish to keep that spot.

As with all races you really never can predicts what will happen. As it goes 4 slipped off the front. Dogfish, Gateway, VeloForce and one other that I don't recall which team he was from. This left little motivation for anyone in the pack to chase them down. VeloForce was represented yesterday but not Saturday, early on they were pulling back other attempts to break away, but now with one guy up the road that came to an end. Gateway had Andy in the break with Allen in the pack sitting 2nd overall, they were not going to help and Dogfish had one guy in the chase who would now sit on.

I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. I needed the KOM points but they were quickly slipping away to the break. I could put in a big effort to chase them down, but surly I would have been met with a counter attack and I would have burned a match before the KOM. I stayed with the chase group taking my chances for points at the end.

Jose did a nice move off the chase group to bridge up. He put in a monster effort and just about reached them. Bad luck with prevail as he took a wrong turn.

After the KOM hill Tracy would attempt to get away a couple times only to be marked and brought back. I tried one time to get away, the pack would have none of those shenanigans, pulled back. So it came down to a finish line sprint.

4 man break away, plus a big shark guy and Chris Hudson who slipped off the front only left 4 places for points in the end. Tracy was one point back and surely he would out sprint me which he did. He got one point which put us in a tie for 5th. But thanks to my better placing on Saturday I won the tie breaker taking home 5th overall, 15th in the road race.

Super fun weekend of racing!

Hellbender Crit

It's June which means it's time for Hellbender Omnium and the Stage Road race. This year Hellbender precedes the State race so yesterday Jose and I made the short drive to Rolla for stage 1 of 2.

What makes the Hellbender crit appealing to me is the low numbers. I'm not a crit guy, I don't like racing round and round with 75 to 100 people, just not my thing. Hellbender historically has not drawn big numbers so there was no worries. 13 ended up starting the race.

Plan for the day, no plan, just let things happen and get in a good effort. The results was a super fun race. 16 min in Rob (Kort Hammer), Allen (Gateway) and Trent (Big Shark) started to slip off the front as a result of the prime that had just taken place. They developed a gap worth my attention, I was in a good spot at the time, 2nd wheel in the group so I nailed it to bridge across to them. No one chased and I made it across.

Once there I noticed the teams represented where a good mix. Kort, Gateway and Big Shark. All three of these teams had team mates in the chase group. 4 total. That means these 4 would not attempt to chase down the break leaving the  5 remaining guys to get organized if they wanted to chase us down.

Eduardo Nieuwenhuyzen's Photo

The four of us got into a nice rhythm trading efforts as we increased out lead. Seemed like we figured out what sections of the course suited each person best for a turn at the front. Result; we stayed away, lapped the field with 6 or 8 laps to go. Finish sprint resulted in Rob first, Allen 2nd, Trent 3rd with me in 4th.

Today is the road race, I'm in 5th overall for the Omnium. Same plan for today.

Prepping for Cross

I don't race much this time of year, to-date I've only raced two races; Froze Toes and Cedar Cross. It makes for little to write about here other than the occasional training progress updates and any other fun tid-bits of info that come up.

I sold the MTB yesterday which will help transform the new cross bikes into racing machines here soon. Adding  power equipped carbon wheels to one of them.  So I will have my old Power Tap wheel for sale, $600 wheel only, or $700 wheel and computer.

New set of carbon wheels with new G3 powertap!  Can't wait to get these on the bike.

June should be fun!  Hellbender Omnium is next weekend followed by the State RR. I had a good time and good results at both races.

Training progress

Today will end the 3rd of 16 weeks dedicated to threshold improvement. I like this phase of training as it provides fun workouts and progress is seen week over week as I watch the numbers.

Cedar Cross Report

The day finally arrived for over 100 like minded gravel grinders to attempt what would be a test of fitness and mental toughness.

Sunday I felt good with the intention of completing all 110 miles Cedar Cross offered. I was fresh and ready to go.

Game plan rules for the day:
  1. Don't start out too fast, keep to an average watt target I had pre-determined
  2. If I drop off from group I'm with, don't ride solo, wait for another pack and join them.

The race quickly formed a 12 man lead group that lasted for several  hours. Josh Johnson and Dan Miller did the lion share of the work pulling us along as they set the pace.  We completed the first section of single track only loosing one from out group, local Hermann rider Dennis Baumstrak who joined me for this event.

After the 2nd set of single track we lost two more, now down to 9.  This would be the last section of single track before the bag drop which was at the 50 miles mark.

At mile 40 I started to feel the result of not following game plan rule #1.  I really never wanted to go over 170 avg watts for the day, early on it was 190 for over an hour.

Result I fell off the pack as we went over the rollers. Anthony Dust and another rider fell off too as they were just 10 to 15 seconds a head of me for the next few miles.

The bag drop was now less then a half mile up the road. I figured a re-group with Anthony and this rider would occur there and we could then ride together for awhile. Well I took a wrong turn and went a half mile down a hill the wrong way. That just sucked!

Made my way back to the bag drop, filled up with water, ate a bit and headed out again. By then Anthony and the other rider were long gone. As I left 3 Red Wheelers entered the bag drop zone.  Here I did not follow game plan rule #2. Should have waited and grouped up with them, but I went on solo.

I finished up the last single track section which was just nasty. Muddy and  torn up by horse traffic, I was glad that was done.

Now I'm 56 miles in, no more shade and mentally I was starting to check out, here is where following rule #2 would  have been helpful.

The thoughts of knowing I would not make the full 110 miles become a reality. I was at mile 63, there  I made the call to end it and call for extraction, AKA Dawndi. When she met up with me I was 73 miles in but no longer on course.

During the ride I told Dennis Baumstark to follow rule 1 and 2, he did so and finished the full 110 miles! They are good game plan rules, you just have to be smart enough to follow them, I am not :)

Big thanks to Bob Jenkins for making this event happen, hope he does it again next year, I want another shot at this.

That event ended 12 week of base training. 135 total hours, same as last year.

Focus now shifts to threshold improvement for 16 weeks.

These two new cross tools arrived last week!  Cross starts in 124 days....

Tour of Hermann 2012

Looks like this year will be one of the best from a numbers and strengtht of field perspective.  It was great to see so many people make the trip to Hermann to enjoy the last Tour of Hermann in this format.

From a promoters perspective things could not have gone smoother from officials to volunteers playing their part to make what makes the TOH what it is. The entire army of 80 volunteers who helped with this race from Saturday to Sunday did an expectational job, could not do this race with out them.

The week leading up to the race is always the most intense, my mind is in a fog thinking and re-thinking all that should be in place and trying to foresee anything I missed.

Saturday the TOH gets started with a 5am start for the TT builders and I.  The highschool for the 2nd year in a row turned out to be a great place to start a TT.

The TT transition to the Crit went super smooth. Many of the volunteers are veterans and Ultramax has been with me for the last 4 years is a big help. You would be surprised at the short amount of time we have to move from TT to Crit to ensure everything starts on time. All did a great job of knowing what to do when to make this happen. Being on time is one if not the most important thing a bike race must have, all weekend long we were on time to the second.

Saturday is the longest day, we don't get done taking everything down and prepping equipment for Sunday until 7pm that night. Then it's time for a huge meal and some beers before crashing for a few hours for another early start on Sunday.

Sunday road race is a shorter but super busy day.  Once categories start finishing their races it's time to tally results, get riders on the podium and payed out so they can make their way home as soon as possible. I know I hate waiting for results and payout so this is a big deal to me. All went as perfect as it can in this area thanks to the volunteer crew who took care of this part.

Sunday comes and goes quick with all this activity, by 3pm the hardware starts to come down and that last item is put back in the shed ready for the next race. As with all my races Danny and Dennis Basumstartk  help me from sun up to sun down each day and we end the race in the gravel lot of the shed ready to go home for some rest.

Thanks to all the racers and volunteers who once again made the TOH a great event.

2013 there will still be a Tour of Hermann, but it will be a two day gravel road race. Keep an eye on the website for more info.

Some things don't go as planned (Base week 9)

This week was a keep it low key week, needed some rest and Hillsboro RR was Saturday. I had the new bike all ready to go....

Then Saturday AM the radar looked like this.

Jose and I opted to stay home. Just one of those things where you have to make the call based on what you think might happen.

Not all was lost, got alot of Tour of Hermann stuff done and made plans for a long ride on Sunday.

But, more storms were in the forecast, so it was out the door at 6:30 for what was 5 hours of sweet gravel. The gravel was perfecto.

Headed out to Cedar Cross grounds with a turnaround at the Nuclear Plant.

Then made my way home with a mix of grave roads I made up as I went along. Sometimes just going where you want is just as fun as a well planned out route.

A storm started to brew near the end so it was time to make my way home.

Another great day of gravel and another day of prep for Cedar Cross.

Fitness continues to build. High end stinks but there is a good base there.

This week things get super busy with Tour of Hermann prep and promotion.  Some bike time will happen but it's more about making this last Tour of Herman the best it can be.

Cedar Cross Prep and a trip to Mt. Sterling via gravel (Base WK 8)

Good solid week again as week 8 comes to a close. It's more base work but also more Cedar Cross prep. Can't get this race out of my head. I love it when this happens, you get a seed planted in your belly to do an event or reach a goal. It's motivating and helps focus my goals.

At the end of the week training load reach 72.4 (CTL). That is actually 5 points higher then last year at this time. I've not done the 3 week on, 1 week off approach, more of a rest when needed. The result a steady rise in fitness. The down side is fatigue is higher and form is very negative. Not a good combination if you want to hammer on Thursday night and expect to crest the hills first. But that is not the goal right now.  However I do need to rest up this week for Hillsboro road race.

With Easter this weekend it opened up Saturday for a long ride. I put out here early in the week on the inter web and social media sites that I would be doing a 88 mile gravel ride. All were welcome to join in the joy that is Hermann gravel.

Feast your eyes on this bad boyabove. Hands down the hardest and hilliest ride that the Hermann area has to offer. Look at the profile and gradient gain, 3579 feet! It was up or down and sometimes there were a few that had to walk up the hills.

Most of this gravel I've done, but some was new to me and a trip to Mt. Sterling and back was also new. I did a quick search for a place to eat in Mt. Sterling and found that they had a good reputation for a killer sandwich at their general store. Perfect match; hungry riders on a long gravel ride and a good sandwich. So Mt. Sterling was the turnaround point.

It did not disappoint, look at that stacked piece of heaven :)

Half way was this. (47 miles at an average of 166 watts)

I was looking to stay closer to 160 watts but the hills would not allow it.
After 3 hours and 15 min of ride time we started our way back to Hermann. Pete Goode and John Johanson were my riding partners for this ride. We did start with six but soon pace ability spit the six into two groups. Unfortunately the 2nd group had to call it a day at Mt. Sterling. One rider was fatigued and another broke a crank arm.

On the way back the three of us broke up fast. I had the advantage on the hills over Pete on his SS and John on MTB 29'r rig. I pulled away on the first few hills ready to set and continue a good solid with no waiting at corners or intersections and pumped that this would be a 6 plus hour day.

I was not even going to stop for the meat shoot

At miles 65 things went wrong with my derailur, it just fell off and that was it. My ride was over and that 6 hour plus ride was not to be.

I know I could have made it a SS with the right tools but that did not come to mind until after I called for a pick up.

Pete and John made back to Hermann A-OK with over 90 miles to brag about when they returned to their homes.

Now Sunday it's time rest and enjoy the Easter. Dawndi and I did a nice ride on the Katy Trail. And I got her out on some gravel :)

And the dogs were worn out after a trip to the local tennis court for a round of throw and catch,

Trucking along (Week 7)

Moving right along down the path of fitness. With 7 weeks now under my belt things are starting to feel good and can see some progress.

I'm most focused on the Cedar Cross event in May.

I've dialed in my nutrition plan and bike set up. Now it's about getting ready with miles and hours on the bike so that I can do 113 miles of gravel. I also think I settled in on about what my pace needs to be to finish. Target is 160 to 163 watt average, which depending on the weather will be 15 to 16 mph average.  That's 7 to 8 hours. I want to start off conservative so I can juice it up for the last 20 or so miles. Just over 30 days before this challenge starts.

2012 is the last Tour of Hermann

FYI - This year will be the last Tour of Hermann. It will be the 5th and final addition. If you've been on the fence about doing this race you should hop off and make the commitment to compete, it's the last chance you'll have.

Why? I want to do something else. I have the time and energy to do two races a year, this one and Dogfish CX in Hermann. DFCX will remain, you'll find a new event from me next year. Can't say what or when yet, but after the TOH you'll see some splashes of info of a totally new and different event that will tour Hermann. But for now enjoy the last TOH and thanks for all that have supported it over the years.

Base Week 6 (half way)

Base is now half done after 6 weeks of good solid work on the bike.  I did a quick look at Jan 1st to now 2011 vs. 2012  mean max chart to see if I'm over or under last years progress. Keep in mind not all things are consistent from year to year but it's still a good gage.  I'm more interested in w/kg at the 1 min plus mark and pleased with progress.

Fitness feels good and growing.

I had plans to race Lost Valley on Sunday, but the rain and potential mud race scared me away.  In the end it looked like a great turn out and appeared the trail was in good shape. I opted instead for a 5+ hour gravel ride in prep for Cedar Cross. It ended up being 80 miles. I did an 80 miles road ride last Sunday, comparing the two rides it's amazing how much more work a gravel ride requires vs. road. I was whooped at the end of the day. Not ready yet for 113 miles that will be required for Cedar Cross.

Photo from Sunday that cracked me up.

Base Week 5 and Nurtrition

Another solid week of training despite all the rain and thunderstorm dodging.  Had two awesome workouts, Friday and Sunday, that ranked up there as season bests.

Fitness is growing

On the nutrition side of things I've been reading and researching new products that are low in sugar and easy on the digestive system.  I landed on Hammer Nutrition. I know they have been around for a long time and the company name is nothing new to many,  but if you have not looked at them in some time, take another look.

What I like
  • Gel - great for under 2 hour workouts in the 5 serving flask. No more individual packets that get sticky and generate trash.
  • Perpetuem - for workout longer than 2 hours this stuff is awesome. I've tested the one hour bottle process twice now; last Friday on a 2.5 hour hammer ride and Sunday on an 83 mile ride. Result was never feeling a loss of power or hunger. Amazing you can get all you need for nutrition and hydration in one bottle. I also like the fact this allows you to carry less on the ride.
  • Endurolytes Fizz - I tend to cramp, dropping one of these in my water bottle is easy and convenient. Jury is out still on cramps. I did try to push the ride on Sunday during the last 15 miles so that I would cramp. Normally this is the time of the ride where it will happen. No cramps.
  • Recoverite - Good stuff too, today after the long Sunday ride I feel fresh with no soreness.
So there you go, it's worth a look of you are looking for new products.

Base Week 4

Another solid week of work getting in 10.5 hours of training. This time around I'm taking the approach of rest when needed, vs. the 3 weeks on 1 week rest approach. If I feel tired then I'll take a day or two off or ride easy for a few days.

Once I get to 80 CTL (fitness) I will start to focus on threshold improvement which should be around early May.

After 4 weeks of training

Signed up for the 11th Annual Hillsboro-Roubaix Road Race, 40+ category. Added a 44 chain ring to the front from my normal 42 single ring set up for this race. Getting that bike all set so it will be ready to go by April 14th.   But before that looks like Lost Valley marathon category is a go if this dry weather pattern keeps up.

Base Week 3

Local rider Jose is super pumped for this years racing season. He is a good 3 weeks ahead of me from a fitness perspective which is good and bad. Good in that he pushes me to work harder as I try to catch up to where he is, but bad in the fact he tends to drop me on occasion during our training rides. I don't like getting dropped by Jose, so Jose, if you are readying, watch out  :)

Thursdays have turned into a hilly hammer fest day for the three of us that ride on a regular basis in Herman; Jose, Dennis and I.  We hit up the first 12 miles of the www.tourofhermann.com road race and back and use the KOM as a sprint point to see who will be king for the day. So far Jose is King. It is one of those training days you know will be hard, one of those days you look forward to all week and one of those days you get to test your self.

Training continues to move along well, fitness is coming back as the rides get longer and harder each week. I'm not following such a rigid plan this time around for this 12 week base block. The goal is to get as much riding in as I can, strength three days a week, hilly hammer ride on Thursday and a long ride on Sunday.  Focus is to move the fitness number now at 48.7 to 80+ at at 3 to 5 point weekly growth rate.

After three weeks

Froze Toes

Froze Toes on my CX bike is not the best idea. I can get away with it on hilly road races, but when you mix in 25mph winds, flat roads and  206 max cadence; that equals drop.

Overall good time, good work out.

Entire workout (174 watts):

Duration: 2:39:27

Work: 1660 kJ

TSS: 163.4 (intensity factor 0.785)

Norm Power: 204

Distance: 46.482 mi

Motivated for 2012/ Race Schedule

After what seemed liked an extraordinarily long break from training I'm finally back at it and motivated for 2012. My fitness dropped down to 32 (blue line), much further than last year so it's taken some time to feel good again on the bike.

Last  year I let it drop to 52. But I needed to complete some much needed house projects  which superseded time on the bike, and well worth it. Time will tell how this impacts my cross season.

I'm now into week two of base trying to get in as much bike time and strength work as I can. This years strength tool is the Rack System. I'm not trying to look like the guy on the web site, goal is to strengthen my core, back and stabilizer muscles. I've use it three times a week for three weeks now. Good tool, easy to use and hard.

2012 will be different for sure. Last year I did a lot of gravel riding. This year I'm not as motivated to hit the gravel roads for some reason, more road rides this time. I also had my sights on alot more MTB races. I go with what motivates me, gravel and MTB races not so much this time around. What is motivating are road races.

I've tried to find as many road races as I can, some will work, some won't, but I listed all that might.  The State RR is a target race; looking for the KOM and Masters State Jersey that day.

Slow Start to 2012

With out much to report on the bike side of life there has been little to nothing to talk about, hence the sabbatical from the blog. The reality of things is I took a nice long break from the bike and focused on other things. Some major time and effort whent into working on the house with trim work, painting and wood flooring. That stuff is hard work.

I think the extended break will be a good thing for me this year as it pushes everything back some. a true base training program gets going next week.

This is what a nice long break looks like

This is what a nice long break gives me time to do, new office / HQ for Hermann Cycling Events
Hope all your winter training is going well.

2011 Break Down

The goal from year to year is to improve right? And have fun and enjoy bike racing, all that is true too. But honestly the goal is to get better, faster and stronger each year until that maximum potential is achieved.

I break up the year like this
  1. Winter training (12 weeks) Jan to April
  2. Threshold improvement round 1 (8 weeks)
  3. Threshold improvement round 2 (8 weeks)
  4. Cyclocross Training (23 weeks)
Winter Training (base)
Spent allot of outdoor time on the mountain bike riding gravel. There were some good rides over these 12 weeks; good strong rides that ended with a 75 mile, 5 hour + gravel ride to Owensville and back.

The goal over the 12 weeks was to build the hours on the bike and always feel good after a long ride, like you could do more if you had the time. Each weekend I would build the weekend ride hours up, adding a bit more time each week.  I felt great about the 5 hour gravel ride and felt ready for phase 2, threshold improvement.

From a numbers perspective these 12 weeks were about building fitness (CTL). A good growth rate for me is 3 to 4 points a week for three weeks then hold or reduce by 1 point during the rest week.  With this strategy I went from a 55CTL to 72 after 12 weeks.

Threshold Improvement Round 1 and 2
This was a new addition to my annual training plan this year. A specific set of time and workouts dedicated to threshold improvement coupled with continued CTL building. The same number of weekly hours that were completed in Winter Training continued for the 16 weeks of THLD Improvement.

This strategy worked well for me, I think it set me up for the high intensity cyclocross training that would follow.

The numbers showed the training worked, I went from starting THLD training at 260 to 274 when it was over. 274 is the best I've been able to produce, obviously I was pleased.

THLD improvement is also where my base fitness would peak for the season, 85.4 CTL. I would now carry this for the next 23 weeks as cross training was about to begin.

With 500 annual hours to train with 85 CTL is about as high as I can get. The maximum number of weekly hours I can complete is 12 to 13 hours. Sometimes 38% of the weekly hours are done in one long training ride on Sunday. So the final objective of these 16 weeks is to reach 85 CTL.

Cyclocross Training
I started this phase 6 weeks before the first CX race. Objective was to hit the CX season in tip top race shape then continue with good form to the end.

Spending 6 weeks training at high intensity paid off. The CX season started with a bang then really never let up. Sure there were some races that I had bad legs but overall it was awesome.

In October I did a 1 min and 5 min test to see how well the high intensity stuff was working. I about fell over in my chair after I downloaded the numbers. Achieved my best 1 and 5 min power averages by a significant amount.

As the season moves along it's impossible for me to maintain or grow CTL. It will come down week over week due to reduced volume and more frequent rest days. No more 10 to 13  hour weeks, 7 to 8 hours is the norm. What makes this work is the high intensity. The unknown question for me was how long could I  maintain high intensity training, race well and not get sick?

I found out the hard way, 20 weeks is my max window for cyclocross. The race before Christmas I was fatigued, then after Christmas on the 29th  I got sick, and am still sick today. I may have found the answer to the above question the hard way but I'm ok with that, the answer to me is very valuable and will help me plan 2012.

From 30,000 Feet
Again improvement is the name of the game. Comparing last year vs. this year from a max watts per kilogram perspective I walked away stronger. Click the image to make larger.

What will change for 2012?
  1. I will let go racing Nationals and Worlds. Racing after Christmas I now have a different perspective on. I have 20 weeks to maximize my results and that will start 6 weeks before the first cross race then end after MO State CX weekend.
  2. I will add USGP Madison - I've decided a trip to Madison in September will be much more enjoyable then a trip to Madison or Louisville in January.
The rest of the plan will remain the same. 249 days till cross starts!

CX Season Comes to an End today

That's it, called it an end to the season today for a few reason, mainly due to another round of sickness that I caught over the Christmas holiday. It's going to take a few days to get over this which will impact training and performance for Worlds that is less than two weeks away.

I know many will say "just get well and go have fun at Worlds". I could do that but that's not how I roll. I'm not going to invest in travel, days off work, hotel costs  for just a ride around the park, so I've done what is best for me and called the season done. I need to get rested up then begin training for next year.

2011 has been an awesome season, best one so far. Results were better than expected and the fun factor was off the charts. When you start training as early as I do it does apparently takes its toll on the body and I can only take it so far.

This I will learn from for 2012 which will include calling the season over after State and adding the Madison USGP event to replace Worlds. Really, a trip to Madison in September will be much more enjoyable then a trip to Louisville in Jan. And Dawndi will enjoy it more too.
The next few days I will rest up, clean bikes and get ready for winter training.
